New Zealand: Nelson Jazz & Blues Festival

Black Sand Diva - Nelson Jazz Festival, New Zealand

A tip from an American couple I met in Golden Bay led us to Nelson to catch the final day of their yearly jazz festival.  It was with their glowing recommendation that we made our way to see BlackSandDiva at the House of Ales.

Arriving early, but a bit later than we should have, the venue was already pretty packed.  It was by sheer luck that we happened to score a small table and enjoy the show from there.  And what a show it was.  The band and their brilliant mix of jazz, soul, & funk was a huge hit, and played nearly 3 hours with only a short 10min break in the middle.  Best part, free.

You can check out BlackSandDiva on their myspace page which offers music, videos, and listings for upcoming shows.  “Chameleon”, their first independently released album was just released in 2009.  This is a band that is at their best when playing live.  Their energy just doesn’t come across in the same way in their recordings so definitely check them out if you have a chance.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that they are currently playing much outside of New Zealand, but do keep an eye out for them.

The Nelson Jazz & Blues Festival happens yearly in the first part of January showcasing local artists from the area, the rest of New Zealand, and even a few from past the open waters.  The event runs for 7 days at a host of venues in and around Nelson.
