Persepolis Sunburst When looking at ruins of what was once a grand ceremonial complex like #Persepolis, it can be hard to imagine what it looked like when it was at its most beautiful. This is where a talented guide shows how priceless their knowledge and enthusiasm is. Vahid, with great arm movements, darting back and forth on the balls of his feet, and pointing to different artworks and ruins, dove into why Persepolis was so important, and how it fell. One of the things that really struck me when I was there, was how devoid of tourists it was. Here is this world-class heritage site, and we were the only westerners around. And honestly, there weren't many Iranians around either! Those that I saw often came over asking how my trip was, thanking me for coming to Iran, and asking for a photo. The Music Hall of Ali Qapu Yet another gem found in the Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan, the Ali Qapu palace was under renovations on the rainy day I arrived. The music hall, high up on the 6th floor has dozens and dozens of these little cupboard-like cutouts in the walls. Not for storage, these are actually designed for acoustics, though I didn't have a chance to hear for myself. That's why we always have a next time... Night Lights at the Shah Mosque Isfahan was definitely a highlight of mine in Iran, and I spent a lot of time wandering around the Naghsh-e Jahan Square in particular. It is just an excellent and beautiful place to gather, at any time of the day. The Shah Mosque dates back nearly 400 years and the interior dome offers some fantastic acoustics, which my brother @Vahid_aen demonstrated with his incredible voice as he sang for us. Like many times in Iran, the images came easily. It's so photogenic... but the memories are held firmly in place by the experiences I shared with people who stepped out to show me the way of the land. #iran #yoiran #isfahan #esfahan #Naghsh-eJahan #shahmosque
Sunset in Kashan It was just before sunset, and it was a bit of a rush. Time was of the essence if we were going to capture the light as the sun was setting. The place: #Kashan. A charming little city that I really thought was beautiful. The scene: The rooftop of the Kashan Bazaar, if we could make it in time. We wound our way through the bazaar, trying our best to focus on the task at hand and not be distracted by all of the interesting shops, and politely declining the all of the invites to join for tea. We got to where we needed to be, under a particularly tall dome and meeting area in the bazaar, and moments later we were heading up a dark, narrow staircase. Near the top, I began to see the light shining above through a crack in the door. When I stepped out, I was now on the rooftop of the bazaar, looking out over the city. The sun glowed orange, painting the warm light all over the mud-brick of the roof. The dome of a nearby mosque glowed in the sunlight. Perfect timing. #everydaykashan #yoiran #DustinsSunsets
Architecture for Days Architecture is a big deal in #Iran, in fact, I've never been in a place where I have met so many architecture students in my life. And if you're a fan of patterns, geometry, and the like, it's like being a kid in a candy store. This is a dome in a bazaar in #Yazd. A Tale of Complicated Places There has been a lot of fear around two places that are near and dear to me during the past couple of years: Myanmar and Iran. My main projects have been in Myanmar for the past 6 years or so, but one of my secondary projects has been in Iran. I'd been interested in Iran for many years before my first trip there in 2015. Like many places I'm keen to understand, there seemed to be a giant gap between what you would see on the news about the place, and what I heard first hand from people who had actually been there. Friendly people, beautiful architecture, fascinating culture, and a population who takes pride in higher education. Iran is back in the news as of last week, as Trump pulled out of the landmark nuclear deal that was put in place a few years ago. It's just put more rhetoric and fear front and center, but that should be no surprise given his past behavior. The fact that all of other leaders who are also part of the agreement completely disagreed with his assessment tells the real tale. So over the coming weeks, I'll be sharing images and stories from my journeys to Iran in 2015 and 2017. I'm going to start with the absolutely stunning Masjed-e Sheikh Lotfallah (aka Lady's Mosque) in Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan. I was fortunate to have a chance to visit here a pair of times. On the second visit, I left my Mom outside (yep, I took my Mom to Iran) so I could go in and focus on photography. When I came back out 25min later, she wasn't where I left her, but moments later she waved me over. A pair of women had invited her over, brought her some tea and sweets and were chatting about her journey and their lives. #iran #yoiran #isfahan #esfahan #mosque #persia
Moms Someone who has been always been supportive of my crazy plans and schemes. Someone who was a surrogate Mom to many of my friends growing up. Someone who is up for whatever crazy adventure I have in store for her. Someone who makes a great pizza To the Moms out there, the ones that are gone, and the ones to come. Back At It Two weeks just flew by quickly! But snuck one last image up just before May arrives I've been hard at work, finishing the last company taxes today, and further aclimating to time back in Canada I've been spending time over the past few weeks going through thousands of photos from early trips to #Myanmar, as I compile images and stories for my upcoming books. Many of these images, I've never had the chance to look at before, and as you can imagine, is a little like going through an old shoebox of memories from years gone by... And that sometimes slows the process down It's been interesting having those memories and feelings come up again in seeing those images. It makes me contemplate where I'm at and what I'm doing now, compared to what I was doing then At that time, I was diving into all that is Myanmar, with little background knowledge. Just learning as I go. Obviously now, with years under my belt there, it's a different experience As I continue through my catalog in the coming days and weeks, I'll resurface images and share some of them here.
